Honest.Education — The Process

How certification works.
Step by step.

From upload to H-number in minutes. Here is exactly what happens at every step.

STEP 01

Submit the student's essay

  • Create an account and purchase essay credits — $399 for the first essay, $199 for each additional essay.
  • Paste the student's college admissions essay directly into the submission form. No file uploads, so the original text never passes through document-parsing tools that could train on it.
  • Add the student's name and date of birth. That is all we need.
STEP 02

Verify your identity and sign the sworn attestation

  • Before certifying, we confirm your identity with a government-ID check through Stripe Identity.
  • The name on your verified ID must match the name you use to sign the sworn attestation. They are compared automatically.
  • By signing, you take legal responsibility for the honesty of the work. The attestation is legally meaningful and attaches to you, the adult — not to the student.
STEP 03

We verify human authorship

  • On submission, our certification process scans the essay for signs of generative-AI authorship using academic-grade methodology overseen by Dr. Lisa McGrady.
  • Your sworn attestation and the authenticity scan work together. Your word, backed by analysis.
  • If the scan flags the essay for potential generative-AI, you choose: cancel for a refund of your purchase price minus a $100 review fee, or proceed with the certification anyway. We know false positives can happen, and you know your child, so we want you to decide what is right.
STEP 04

Receive your H-number

  • Once certified, the essay is assigned a unique H-number. This is your proof. Your student can add certification to their essays with fifteen simple words: "This essay is certified as free from generative AI, H-Number: H-4F7K-9P3M-2X8Q. Visit www.honest.education to verify."
  • You can access a locked, certified PDF of the essay with the H-number printed on a certificate page appended to the document.
  • The H-number is permanently listed in our searchable database.
STEP 05

Admissions officers verify instantly

  • Your student includes the certification language with every college application essay.
  • Any admissions officer can visit our public verification page, enter the H-number and student's last name, and instantly confirm the essay was certified as human-written.
  • No login is required for the admissions officer. No delay. No ambiguity.

What is an H-number?

The H-number is a unique, high-security certificate identifier assigned to every certified essay. It is non-sequential and cannot be guessed or enumerated.

Your student includes it with every application. It tells admissions readers: this essay has been independently certified as human-written. Here is the proof. Look it up.

Think of it as an academic credential for the essay itself. A record of honest work, documented before anyone asked.

How admissions officers verify

The lookup takes thirty seconds. It requires no account.

1

Officer visits the verification page

Any admissions reader can go to Honest.Education and click Verify an H-Number. No login. No friction.

2

Enters H-number and last name

They enter the H-number from the application, plus the student's last name as a second confirmation. Both are required.

3

Instant confirmation

They see the student's name, the certification date, the first paragraph of the certified essay, and the attestor's name and relationship to the student. They can easily confirm the essay matches what they received.

Common questions

Is this anti-AI?

No. We are completely neutral on AI. We believe students who use AI tools for research, brainstorming, or editing deserve to make that choice. Honest.Education exists for students who chose to write their own essays and want a way to prove it. We are pro-proof, not anti-AI.

Does this guarantee admission?

No. Honest.Education certifies authenticity only. It says nothing about the quality of the essay or any admissions decision. We never promise or imply any outcome related to college admission.

What if my school does not ask for it?

It still protects your student. If a question ever arises about an essay's authenticity, an H-number is documented proof that existed before the question was asked. That matters.

What does the sworn attestation mean?

The attestation is a formal, legally meaningful statement that an adult signs affirming the essay is entirely the student's own human work. It is not a casual checkbox. Before signing, you verify your identity with a government-ID check, and the name you sign with must match that verified identity. It carries the weight of that adult's word.

Who can sign the attestation?

A parent, legal guardian, or the student themselves if they are 18 or older. If the student is under 18, the attestation must be signed by a responsible adult, not the student. Whoever signs must complete the government-ID verification step first — the signed name has to match the verified ID.

What if the essay does not pass?

If the authenticity scan flags your essay, you choose between two paths. You can cancel and receive a refund of your purchase price minus a $100 review fee, or you can proceed with the certification anyway. There is no free resubmission — certifying a revised essay would require a new credit.

How does the verification database work?

Every H-number is stored against the student's name. An admissions officer enters the H-number and the student's last name. If both match, they see: the student's name, the date certified, the first paragraph of the certified essay, and the attestor's name and relationship to the student, so they can confirm it matches what they received.

Is my child's essay data private?

Yes. We store the minimum data necessary, use encrypted storage, and never share essays or student data with any third party. Admissions officers can verify a certification but cannot retrieve the full essay through our database. Essays are pasted as raw text — there is no document-parsing step — and your child's essay is never sent to a generative AI model.

Ready to get proof?

Certification takes minutes. The H-number lasts as long as it needs to.
